62. Rewrite the passage in direct speech.
Joan worked in a shop selling tapes and records. One day a middle-aged woman came in, sat on a stool in front of the counter and beamed at Joan. Addressing Joan familiarly she said she wanted a record — one she had heard on the radio that morning. Joan asked what the record was called. The woman shook her head, and said she didn’t remember, though she would know it if she heard it. She suggested Joan should play her some and settled herself more comfortable on her stool. Joan pointed out that they had hundreds of records in stock and that it would take a very long time to play her even a little of each. She asked the lady if she could hum it to her. The woman giggled and replied that she couldn’t sing «God save the Queen» in tune. They would get into a worse muddle if she started humming. She looked very depressed but suddenly her face brightened. She had just remembered something, she said; it came from a play in which, there was a woman who spoke very badly but who after a time learned to talk beautifully. Joan asked if it would be from My Fair Lady. The woman exclaimed that that was it. She wished Joan had thought of it earlier instead of wasting time asking silly questions. She supposed Joan was new to her job.
63. Imagine you are Gordon and report this conversation to another friend one day after the event.
«What’s under there?» I asked, seeing the bulge at Claud’s waistline. He pulled up his sweater and showed me two thin but very large white cotton sacks which were bound neat and tight around his belly. «To carry the stuff,» he said darkly.
«I see.» «Let’s go», he said. «I still think we ought to take the car.» «It’s too risky. They’ll see it parked.» «But it’s over three miles up that wood.» «Yes,» he said. «And I suppose you realize we can get six months in the clink if they catch us.» «You never told me that.» «Didn’t I?» «I’m not coming,» I said. «It’s not worth it.» «The walk will do you good, Gordon. 64. Report the following interview as if you were the doctor.
The doctor waited. The clock ticked. I stared at the fire.
«Jake doesn’t want any more children,» I said.
«Do you like children, Mrs Armitage?»
«How can I answer such a question?»

65. Rewrite the sentences in direct speech. Note that in those examples there is an implied dialogue and that the reported version is, in some cases, very much a paraphrase of the original. Students should reconstruct the dialogues in their most likely original form, e.g.

Приветствую Вас, уважаемые подписчики!
Как известно, обучение языку, во многом схоже с медицинским лечением. Когда мы заболеваем, то обращаемся к доктору, доктор назначает нам курс лечения и какие-то процедуры. А результат этого лечения никому не известен. Всё в этом деле зависит от самого пациента, от его настроя и желания выздороветь.
Так и в большинстве случаев получатся с изучением языков. Назрела необходимость выучить английский язык, вы идёте за помощью к репетитору, на курсы или покупаете новый самоучитель. Но, окончательный результат зависит только от вас, от вашего упорства и настойчивости в изучении языка. А вот упорства и настойчивости многим не хватает.
Но, как часто вы спрашивали себя после окончания того или иного курса, какой результат я имею? Что я приобрёл после 2-3 месяцев обучения языку? А кто-то и после года обучения даже и не решается применить полученные навыки на практике, к примеру, в разговорной речи.
Как правило, человек надеется научиться разговорному английскому, читая на английском, делая много переводов с английского на русский, выполняя какие-то упражнения, слушая аудио записей диалогов на английском, можно заучивать, а потом разговаривать по типовым диалогам и шаблонным фразам, приучая подсознание подстраиваться под услышанные выражения адаптированных учебников (курсов).
А как насчет того чтобы попробовать сделать перевод простенького текста с русского на английский?
А теперь, на практике, давайте попробуем перевести следующие предложения:
1. Я знал, что она еще не прочитала письмо.
2. Она напомнила мне, что вечером будет собрание.
3.Она считала, что ананасы растут на деревьях.
4. Он сказал нам, что расплатился с долгами (pay one’s debts) больше месяца назад.
5. Он сказал, что они обсудят этот вопрос на следующей неделе.
6.Она сказала, что пишет это сочинение (composition) уже три часа.
7. Отец спросил ее, кто ей звонил час тому назад.
8.Она не знала, успешно ли закончилась (be a success) операция.
9. Брат меня спросил, когда вернется мама.
10. Мама сказала, что вчера вечером ей звонил брат.
11. Они не знали, будут ли опубликованы результаты их исследований.
12. Он сказал, что он был на конференции изобретателей в 1975 году.
13.Я думал, что он работает, и не вошел в комнату.
14. Он будет принимать участие в шахматном турнире? Я ответил, что (он) будет. Я ответил, что (он) не будет.
Чтобы перевести подобные предложения, нужно: во-первых не только знать перевод незнакомых слов, но и чётко ориентироваться во всех временах английского глагола.
Обязательно освойте все 20 времен активного и пассивного залога, потому как, когда мы хотим передать смысл услышанного или сказанного (косвенная речь), или констатируем факты которые имели место, НЕОБХОДИМО ДЕЛАТЬ СДВИГ НА ОДНО ВРЕМЯ НАЗАД. Если вы умеете это делать, то без затруднения сделаете перевод на английский. По-началу, это кажется непривычным, а потом входит в привычку, и даже иногда начинает резать слух, когда кто-то делает перевод подобных предложений, пользуясь принципом: «Как слышу, так и перевожу»:).
Во-вторых, нужно помнить, что при сдвиге времени нужно заменять следующие слова:

— She told me that she would write a letter then.

Ни для кого ни секрет, что эту информацию можно найти в любом учебнике. Но на этот процесс уходит масса времени и как правило вся информация не воспринимается. Потому как, пока пытаешься понять одно, потихоньку забываешь предыдущие правила. Было бы лучше, если весь материал изучить на одном дыхании всё и сразу, чтобы не путаться!
Но, формат традиционных учебников и подобных рассылок не позволяет этого сделать, поэтому приходится растягивать процесс подачи материала на длительное время.

Ещё один нюанс, даже если вы очень хорошо будете знать грамматику, ваш язык будет суховатым, если он будет оставлять без перевода на «иностранный» то, что составляет изюминку каждого языка: идиомы и фразеологизмы или устойчивые обороты речи, значение которых не определяется значением входящих в него слов. Например, «остаться с носом», «совать палки в колёса», «лясы точить». В своей каждодневной речи мы, сами того не замечая, постоянно используем идиомы и фразеологизмы. Мы скорее скажем «Он тянет кота за хвост» вместо «Он тянет время».
В каждодневной речи мы используем около 200 идиом, которые и делают ее живой и выразительной.
